Apply for Housing for People With Disability

To get started with applying for an SDA home at Hume, please answer the following questions. This will make the application process easier and it will help us to give you the right information.

Question 1

Are you aged 18 to 64 years old?

Yes

Call us on 1800 004 300 and select Option 2. Ask to speak with a member of the Housing Options Program Team. Alternatively, email the team at [email protected]. We can provide a holistic assessment of your situation and refer to a Hume program or another agency that may be able to assist.

Question 2

Are you an Australian resident or have a permanent residency visa?

Yes

No

Call us on 1800 004 300 and select Option 2. Ask to speak with a member of the Housing Options Program Team. Alternatively, email the team at [email protected]. We can provide a holistic assessment of your situation and refer to a Hume program or another agency that may be able to assist.

Question 3

Are you willing to live in shared housing?

Yes

No (or unsure)

Speak with your NDIS Support Coordinator. They can help you determine if this is a realistic option for you. A majority of vacancies in the SDA program are shared homes. You have your own bedroom space and will be living with other customers, sharing facilities, such as kitchen, living spaces, bathrooms, garden areas and so forth. A Supported Independent Living (SIL) provider will also be on-site at the property.

If sharing a house is not for you, call us on 1800 004 300 and select Option 2. Ask to speak with a member of the Housing Options Program Team. Alternatively, email the team at [email protected]. We can provide a holistic assessment of your situation and refer to a HUME program or another agency that may be able to assist.

Alternatively, call 1800 004 300 and select Option 2. Ask to speak with a member of the Housing for People with Disability team or [email protected] to see if there are any available properties that cater to living independently or have additional personal space (separate bathroom, own living space and/or garden). Please note, our vacancies are advertised on the Nest website. You may view the available properties there to determine suitability. Please make sure you can answer YES to question 4 prior to registering an interest on Nest.

Question 4

Do you have SDA funding in your National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Plan?

Yes

No (or unsure)

Speak with your NDIS Support Coordinator. They can help you determine if this is in your NDIS Plan. SDA funding is a key requirement of eligibility for this program. Without this, Hume Housing is not able to make an offer on a vacancy. For more information on SDA, click here.

If you may be eligible but it is not in your current plan or you are unsure, please contact us or have your Support Coordinator contact us on 1800 004 300 and select Option 2. Ask to speak to a member of the Housing for People with Disability Team. Alternatively, email the team at [email protected].

If you are not eligible for SDA funding, call us on 1800 004 300 and select Option 2. Ask to speak with a member of the Housing Options Program Team. Alternatively, email the team at [email protected]. We can provide a holistic assessment of your situation and refer to a HUME program or another agency that may be able to assist.

Question 5

You have confirmed possible eligibility for an SDA-approved property, confirming you are aged 18-64 years, are an Australian resident or hold a permanent visa, are willing to live in shared housing, and have SDA funding as a part of your NDIS Plan.

Next steps to progress in the program:

  • Visit the Nest website
  • Complete an Expression of Interest for each home you feel is the right one for you (you will need to register if you haven't used the website before)
  • Once completed, Hume will respond to your Expression of Interest for a vacancy and ask you to complete an SDA Applicant Form and Consent to Exchange Information Form to confirm your responses to the above questions and ensure you match the eligibility for the property
  • Please note that further compatibility and suitability assessment will be undertaken by the SIL provider and HUME prior to any applicant being put forward to the household for consideration - we will keep you updated throughout the process
